Youth SUICIDE PREVENTION
LUNA is OCAPICA’s new Youth Suicide Prevention program within Anaheim Union High School District focusing on mental health awareness and resource navigation for both junior high and high school students, with a focus on Latinx/Hispanic youth. Youth LUNA Leaders are trained to serve as peer mentors and ambassadors for school-based & community-based suicide prevention messaging, training, mental health services, and programming on select campuses districtwide. LUNA currently serves 3 high schools (Loara High School, Magnolia High School, & Savanna High School) and 4 junior highs (Ball JHS, Brookhurst JHS, Dale JHS, & Sycamore JHS) and will be holding drop-in Wellness SPACEs in Spring 2024 that provide students with peer-to-peer connections and mental health topics/wellness activities, directly on their campuses.
LUNA’s mission is "to be the moon, the light in the darkness, and the guide to a solar system of support, where the wellbeing and mental health of Anaheim youth is supported through education, connection and care."
LUNA reaches school communities (peers, friends, staff, etc.), parents and families, and all of us, who need a bit more light.
This funded opportunity for OCAPICA is through the California Department of Public Health (Assembly Bill (AB) 178 partnering with The Center at the Sierra Health Foundation as part of a larger statewide implementation of a Youth Suicide Prevention and Media Outreach Campaign. Thirty-three other community-based organizations in California are contributing to youth suicide prevention efforts.
